LO5: Reflection

Vicky Kilby is one of the presenters for the show, and she came in to give us some written feedback on the script, in order to make sure they were up to industry standard and looked professional. The target audience for the show is of both male and female with no particular age, this is specifically people who are into gaming. The also are people from around the local area, so it will be aimed at people in the Sheffield Region. Sheffield Live is a low budget show therefore will be aimed at more than just the target demographic of ABC1. This is why in our script we included the information about Mine craft as it is available for a free trial download. We also included information about the local businesses like Sumo Digital. The audience is generally from the local area this means it connects with the station by connecting with the presenters with a regional accent and slang used. Throughout the script using key gaming terms is useful too, which is why we included them within so the gamers will stay interested so the presenters show that they know what they are talking about. The game show will also be broadcast in daytime hours therefore the content of the show will be suitable for people of a young age as it will not include anything against these regulations. The fact that in the script we mention things like the "Sony Morpheus Virtual Reality Helmet" means that the script is entirely gender neutral, meaning we are not trying to stereotype the show to a certain gender. However it is stereotypically known that more males are into games than females. The local audience is also considered when we mention that their is a local gaming company "Sumo Digital" which indicates to the audience that we will provide them with relevant local gaming news.

Throughout Vicky's feedback Vicky explained that our script was solely focused on the technology side of the games. As well as the fact that our script was lacking the local news for games, which was a big part of the show as most of it had to be local so target the local audience. She also mentioned that our script was to formal and if made informal it could be more fun and entertaining for the viewer. We need to go back through the script and make sure we include more local gaming news, for example games released by Sumo Digital or Team Cooper because this would relate to the show being on Sheffield Live! This station only exists to serve the local community.

The improvements needed to be made in the script are that of; less technology focused and more news focused, more informal language to make the script sound less scripted and more features of the gaming industry. It is important that we make these amendments in order to improve the script as a whole. We will also use more local news from around Sheffield and local areas so that it fits in well with the radio show. We will also adapt the dialogue to be more informal than formal so it feels more relaxed and so the audience feels more like a part of the show.

The content of the script I think met the needs the client altogether. The script is written in a formal style which matches a news script I have seen in my examples. However since The games Corner has a different sort of audience or feel to it so it will need to be a be ore informal this is because it is a news show so it will need to be more in a conversational style. The house style of the script is to follow the stylistic conventions of a typical news script, because we wrote the script in a size 12 courier font which is the industry standard for scriptwriting. The script also contains all the information it needs to such as sound effects and graphics effects to make the show a little more interesting. We also include along with the graphics and sound effects what visuals will be appearing on the screen. The mode of address the script was written in is teacher to pupil this is because the show is in a formal style however when we upgrade the script to make it sound more informal the mode of address will be peer to peer. Another thing missing of the content would be some of the shooting script conventions, this includes things like camera directions and transitions as well as the location of the show and even the date and time for the intro of the script, this is all key important for the script. So we will make sure that we have include all of these missing components of the script within the revised/upgraded script.

Our script complies with the Ofcom broadcasting regulations. This is because it does not contain any inappropriate content for children under the age of eighteen because this programme will be broadcast during the day.  Ofcom have specific guidelines about the protection of children under the age of eighteen. This is shown when Ofcom state "material that might seriously impair the physical, mental or moral development of people under eighteen". One thing we must make sure of however is when showing the footage of games with a PEGI rating of over 18 we must make sure that the gameplay footage is appropriate for the ages that could be viewing, so there can't be anything that can't be shown to a younger audience of pre watershed. The scrip will be appropriate because Ofcom describe the content for a daytime audience as no unsuitable material for children which is classed as 'sexual content to violence, graphic or distressing imagery and swearing'. However in regards to bias opinions are allowed in the script to a certain degree as we will be giving people real opinions, which will essentially be promoting and advertising the games. This is to avoid bias and becoming an issue. This is overcome in our script by trying to balance out both the positive and negatives. However due to the show being broadcast on Sheffield Live! we are allowed to include bias as we aren't employed or funded by any of the companies we are advertising and reviewing. In regards to the music, graphics and gameplay footage used on the show we must first gain permission from the owners of the content, this is in order to make sure we have legal permission to use everything, so we do not breach any copyright laws. In regards to the music we could avoid the copyright law altogether and use license free music sites such as Creative Commons or even create our own music for the show using Cubase.

Due to the fact that in the gaming company there are a lot of false rumors going round we will need to make sure that source we are getting them from is reliable. For example we could use the website IGN. However when using information from sources it could be majorly important to reference them in case any of the information comes back false so then it will be traced straight back to the original publisher rather having a problem of starting a rumour.

LO4: Script comparison

Page 1:

As you can tell there was no changes to the first page of the script, this is mainly because the introduction is the only formal concept needed in the show as it short and straight to the point.

Page 2:

The word highlighted in purple, are the ones that have been changes. On the left there is the original version and on the right is the updated. As you can see from the first page this section of the script it less formal.

LO5: Feedback from Vicky

All the needs and expectations have been met through the script and recieved a good positive feedback from vicky about our script. However there is room for improvement on a few aspects.

Vicky was impressed with the amount of detail the script has as well as the amount of equality of the dialogue between the presentersThe dialogue according to Vicky was exactly the right amount, however could be made more informal. This is mainly because the show needed to look more fun and uplifting as this is the main point especially for a BBC News show. To make the show more informal we will need to add some yorkshire dialect, and slang to make it more relatable by the younger generation and the local people too. This will also help to make it look more like the presenters are in a conversation rather than reading it off the script. We also need to remove the talking about the technology and replace it with more fun genre such as games and events.

When Vicky told us her feedback on our script, we found out the majority of her comments were of a positive atmosphere rather than negative. This also came along with improvements we as a group could make. The improvements we were given were both constructive and helpful to the final script.

However we found out that the balance for the dialogue we used for both presenters is equally split and is thorough enough in the detail that is used. This was mainly because Vicky also told us that she thought the information we used was both relevant and appropriate for the Television show it would have been aired upon.

One downside that Vicky spotted within our script was that  it could have been more "fun" this is because it seemed quite formal however does suit the style of the show. To improve the show and make it more fun we should improve the dialogue  by adding more regional dialect so that the local people can relate. As well as including local events to do with gaming and of the indie genre that the viewers would be interested in.

Overall the improving of the script is going to be more thoroughly researched and will include more information on the indie genre of the games as well as games companies Sumo and Rockstar, We will also change the dialogue to suit the audience.

LO2: Research

IGN (12/3/2015) 'Turkey about to ban minecraft' available at http://uk.ign.com/articles/2015/03/12/mojang-responds-to-possible-minecraft-ban-in-turkey [accessed: 10/6/2015]

We used sites such as IGN and BBC News in Gaming for research into the stories for the script. Here's the page for the Minecraft story used in the script.

Stories researched:

Anticipated game Project Cars has been delayed for the third time in a row, resulting in the game’s launch date to be moved back another month. According to publisher Namco Bandai, the hyper-realistic racing sim is now expected to be released in “mid-May” time, and this was to ensure the final build matches fan expectations.
Developer Ian Bell confirms out of the critically-acclaimed racing games that this will be its most “grand and intricately detailed of them all”.

The widely loved sandbox game Minecraft, based on players having the ability to create whatever they please in an open-world, is currently facing a ban in Turkey for being “too violent” and that its depictions of violence “cannot be ignored” according to the Turkish Family and Social Policies Ministry.  This has sparked controversy for gaming fans in Turkey, as Minecraft is believed to be a game solely based on creativity and imagination, rather than an excuse to act as a violent game.

PlayStation Vue, a new project that will act as a cloud-based TV streaming service for both PlayStation 3 and 4, will begin its commercial rollout nationwide by the end of the month for select invitation-only tests. Vue will be targeting “cord-cutters”; people who ditch their traditional cable providers in favour of digital-only services. Vue will let viewers watch many different live TV and on-demand content from networks such as FOX, NBCUniversal, Viacom and CBS.
The cost of subscribing to PlayStation Vue has not yet been announced, but will first be available on consoles and eventually iPads and other non-Sony digital devices.

Job role:

For this unit we are working in groups to create a script for an episode of the 'Games Corner' which will be broadcast on 23 September 2014. In our group there is Me, Becky, Alex and Will. The script for our script was for the first week of the 'Games Corner', which fell on the 16th March. We initially had to have a meeting to make sure that we understood who was doing what within the unit, we decided Alex and Will would do all the pre research and Me and Becky would put all the information together into the script.

LO2: Ideal viewer profile

Taylor is 22 years old and is a full time student at Sheffield Hallam University studying Digital Media Production. She loves her course at Uni and aims to work for one of the local games design companies. Taylor lives with her flatmate in the City centre and has a lot of spare time which she generally spends watching television and playing games on their shared gaming consoles. Her favourite games include Team Fortress 2 on PC, Formula One 2014 and Fallout 3 on Playstation 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5 on her XBOX One. She enjoys not only first person shooters but also racing games as she likes using multi-player modes to compete with friends and people online. Away from her games, Taylor is also an avid Sheffield United fan and plays in a local amateur team, so she's really looking forward to the next FIFA instalment which will include some of the national women'f football teams. When watching television, she generally tunes into informative programmes and documentaries and always checks out the latest entertainment news.

For the task I need to improve my spelling especially on the word 'whereas', how ever I still need to give examples on the narrative structures and why they would use that certain narrative structure. I also need to mention that a video game script uses a flow chart.

How are you going to address the above issues?

To address these issues I will go back over the LO1 Task and correct my spelling issues and go back over the narrative structures to make sure that for each one I have talked about one example of that sort of narrative script and why it would follow that style of narative.

What do you still think you need to work on/improve to achieve these?

I still need to work on mentioning target demographics within the target audience section.

LO1: Comparison of example scripts

A) Style and content

All scripts should generally be written in a courier font size 12. This is because the letters will be the same size as each other therefore take up the same amount of space on the paper, which makes it easier and much clearer to read. This works out more than a calligraphy font as a calligraphy font would be a lot harder to read and would be unclear to someone trying to read the script for filming purposes. However only one of the scripts I found use this font, the script that uses the font is the film script this is because this is the general stylistic convention of a script. However the other scripts may not use this certain font as the media product they are making may be more flexible in terms of stylistic convention. There is many reasons for this. This is shown in the TV Interview script because guest speakers don't generally know what they're going to say on live television, therefore it is completely random to the producers. Where as video game script is less formal and more for the eyes of the producers than other people as they are making sure the commands all have consequences. In scripts certain layouts are chosen for example in some scripts directions can be used. This generally happens in TV/Film and less likely on radio as directions are normally actions that we as viewers can see. On most of the scripts i have mentions within the script they will state (SFX) which shows that there will be a sound effects played there, however it is abbreviated but this is for no other reason than to make the script a lot neater.

Scripts are generally not just used by actors. They are also used by all the production team, interviewees, producers and camera operators as well as show runners and special effects crew. This is so everybody knows what goes where so they know what is going of at all times and when they are needed within the script. This is an advantage to some job roles as it makes it easy on the camera people as they will know when to switch camera, angle, and view etc. However video games scripts often use a synopsis in their script this is in order to summarise their game to give everybody a bit of background knowledge.

There are four narrative structures in scripts, these are,  single-stranded, multi-stranded, linear and non-linear. The scripts I researched, the radio drama script, film script, interview script and news script are all multi-stranded, as they each present narratives/stories/non-fiction events.

B) Narrative structure

Single Stranded - A single stranded film is from the perspective of one character, for example a documentary or a video game. Single stranded scripts are also found in video games where you are playing as a first person playing from one persons view. One example of this would be 'Frozen Planet' This is mainly because David Attenborough is the main focus of the documentary and what is on screen is generally all being talked about by David Attenborough himself with the Voice over.

Multi stranded - Is a script taken from several points of view which is generally what most of the scripts I have looked at are. Which is just like the film, radio and especially radio dramas, this is mainly because of the fact that within the drama there are several characters and you see the story from all their points of view as you can hear exactly what each family is like.

Linear - A linear script is when the story is in chronological order and generally have a beginning, middle and end. The News generally do this is time order as they do things to do with time order when they present the news but they also have a running order. One example of a linear script would be any news script for either tv or radio, This is mainly because these shows have a common objective, they start with the small stories and end with the larger stories but obviously each story they tell would be in order so you don't get confused on the situation that has happened.

Non Linear - Is when a story jumps about using flashbacks and flash forwards to do with going back and forth in time.On example of this would be the film (500) days of summer where the events begin to be told linearly. apart from 9 interruptions which are known as flash forwards but as the days go on these flash forwards the become flash backs. This is important to the film because you are able to see what the character is thinking and how they are feeling, so from the flashbacks we know that the character Tom is now looking back at the relationship and trying to figure out what went wrong.

C) Genre

Radio drama script, film script and video game script are all informal as they exist in order to entertain the audience, where as television news and inteviews can be classed as formal as they are educational and informal therefore have a purpose other than to entertain. An example of a good informal programme is any soap programme for example eastenders, coronation street and hollyoaks etc, this is because they entertain people however these could also be informal as they educate and informal people on real life situations.

D) Target Audience

From the scripts I have researched there is a very differing target demographic for example the script for say a video game of Grand Theft Auto IV would be people above the ages of 18 who like violence so this would be stereotyped towards males. Where as a script for a radio drama such as The Archers would be aimed at people above the ages of 40 who have being listening to show since radios where very popular they would also be aimed at the demographic of ABC1D,  For the video game script I found the audience is teenagers on a more male to female proximatey. This is mainly because males are more stereotyped into playing video games than women generally of the demographic ABC1. The target audience of the television tv script and the interview scrip is equally split by gender ratio as this isn't aimed at a specific gender as it specifically aims at people who are trying to keep up with people interested in current affairs and are regular viewers. These sort of programmes that use these scripts would have the spending power of an A/B in target demographic as these will be the ones that generally had quite good careers. In contrast the target demographics for the radio drama and film script are generally based around the spending powers B/C1. This audience is mainly similar to the audience of video games as the audiences use these sort of entertainment as an escapism from their life. The games themselves are aimed at a certain age range, this is mainly because PEGI chooses the age they are aimed at as some of the games can include things that aren't suitable for children of a certain age as they can include things like violence, graphic violence, bad language, sex, discrimination and drugs.

LO1 - Assignment brief scenerio

Sheffield Live! Is a community Radio station, which now is available on Tv. The Television proggramme is available on both Sky and Virgin.

Sheffield Live gave us the the brief for this unit I have been asked to create a five minute TV news broadcast script for the weekly news section for 'Games Corner'. This is being set by Sheffield Live! To do this assignment we are going to have to research all the new releases and reviews. For this script we will also gain client feedback to help us improve the script s we have written I order to improve our script writing skills. For our script our group has been asked to create the first script of the show. This brief was given to us by Vicky Kirby (Presenter of the show) and Jasmine Sahv (Production Assistant).

LO1: Style and Content

Font in scripts:

Fonts in scripts are generally all written in Courier and size 12. This is a standard size font for a script as it is easy enough to read. The font is generally because it leaves all the letters all spaced out the same and makes sure the width of the letter are the same.

Screenplay:

Generally in scripts for screen play, so scripts for anything like; film, TV and radio have character descriptions so that it is easy for the other characters to understand how to act towards a certain character and how to act towards a certain motive/situation. This especially useful for the person playing the role.

Game Scripts:

Game scripts generally use a flow chart. This is mainly because games aren't specific. This means they need to prepare for the game player to make any move, not just one. So the flow chart will include many different things for many different actions so they will know what will happen after each move is made and what the consequences are for each action.

Presenters/characters:

Presenters and characters are generally set out with the name in the centre of one line on the script and their lines below their name in the standard courier font.

Synopsis:

The game will generally include a synopsis as part of the game play because this will tell you what the game is about and give the player a good idea on what moves you want them to make.

Script directions:

Script/Location directions are generally used in scripts for theatre or a play of some sort this could also be used in TV/film. This is useful because it gives the actor more direction on how to act in a certain situation especially a given situation. This also could be important to the script as if it gives locations it could be based on the next scene etc.

Sound Effects:
